Paper at DSAA 2026: "How Smart are Smart Toys? Quantifying Smartness and Increasing Transparency for Toy Markets"

Our paper, "How Smart are Smart Toys? Quantifying Smartness and Increasing Transparency for Toy Markets", was accepted at the IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA) 2026, and presented by Valentyna Pavliv in New Dehli, India.

While smart toys are increasingly common, the extent to which they incorporate smart features remains unclear. In this paper, we define a smartness indicator, based on electronics, connectivity, and companion app smart characteristics, and analyze smart toys in the German and US markets. We also analyze to what extent sellers communicate security and privacy practices of smart toys.
